| My car was making a small squeaking sound when I brake, so I took it to the Honda service this Saturday.
I told them my break was making a small noise. Before looking at the car, that guy told me I might need to change the rotors. $269 for the front and $239 for the rear. AND, he said, if you change the brake pads without changing the rotors, the new pads will wear out faster to adjust to the old shape of the rotors, at Honda, we use the machines to align the rotors and pads, ... ...
hmmmm, this guy is trying to sell me stuff, I thought. It doesn't hurt to have them check my brakes, EXCEPT the fee was $65. What?! $65 to LOOK at the brakes?! He said, if you change the rotors at Honda, the $65 examining fee is absorbed into the total, leaving only 500 dollars in rotors. (Oh, it's very nice of you. If nothing happens, I pay $65 for nothing? sh!t). "I have to pick up someone at the airport now, I'll be back..."
Then I took my CR-V to a Big-O. MY bf and I went back in 45 minutes, the rep at Big-O asked us if I drive to the beach or in snow a lot. I drive to Reno in the winter. He told us there was a customer towed his boat to the beach a lot, and the wheels make direct contact with salt water, and the panel was completely rusted. He told me my rotors are terribly rusted, he would like to show us how bad they were. But they already put the wheels back. He showed us another rotor with normal wear and tear, and told us my rotors are turning black and the rusts are falling off. holy sh!t, I may die on the road (lol). He typed up an estimate of $700, and offered to take out $200 if I decide to change only the rotors and keep my brake pads.
I ALMOST paid and had them change my rotors. This guy sounds much more knowledgeable than the Honda guy, although I didn't understand those technical terms. He also warned me if my car shakes when I brake after exiting the highway, then it's the first sign that my brakes are braking down. I almost paid, but I didn't. Just a side note, Mercedes and BMW only need to change rotors once in the car's life time, at most twice. Well, I'm driving a Honda...
Then I went to a Les Schwab. I asked them for an estimate, because I felt it's URGENT to change my rotors. The rep told me, well why don't we take a look at your car before ordering the rotors. He took me to the back and showed me my rotors. They are rusted, but far from being black like the Big-O guy described (I felt cheated). He told me rotors should last for 60, 70 thousand miles, mine should be fine for awhile, and my brake pads have 60% left. It's normal that the brakes make a small sound. I can try to get rid of some rusts, but it doesn't guarantee the sound will stop.
Although they can't do much, at least the Les Schwab guys are honest and not trying to rib me off. How much did I spend that day? $0. I should get a 3rd opinion though.

not bad i guess. I stole this from Angel, she has the completely opposite results lol |
